To say the restaurant industry runs in the blood of Owner and Executive Chef Dan Hurley would be an understatement. A native of Maplewood, New Jersey, Dan grew up in a culinary-minded household that prioritized homecooked family meals. In fact, some of these family recipes still make appearances on our menu or as specials here at Piper’s. Dan’s culinary bloodline didn’t begin with his parents, however—Dan is the fourth tavern owner (that we know of) in his family, a tradition dating back to the 1700s.
After spending twenty years in kitchens in New Jersey, Dan and his family relocated to North Carolina in 1995, when Dan became the Sous Chef at Raleigh’s Capital City Club. Dan was the first Executive Chef at Tir na nOg, writing the menu for downtown Raleigh’s original Irish pub. In 2001, Dan teamed up with Jimmy Powers to open the Piper’s Tavern.
Much like his childhood family dinners, Piper’s menu was designed with large portions of homestyle cooking, to ensure that no one leaves hungry and everyone leaves happy. Dan has always wanted Piper’s to be a home away from home for customers from their very first visit. Nothing excites Dan more than talking through the menu with first time customers.
